This isn’t some sit back, cruise, it’s going to be a proper adventure on a sailboat.

THIS IS A STORYTELLING WORKSHOP

The main theme of this workshop is storytelling. How can you with a camera in hand, go out and make interesting films? We are going to unpack how to build a mindset that allows you to approach any kind of scenario and leave with a finished story that moves people. On the trip itself each attendee will be given a filmmaking assignment to create during our time on board.

We will finish and wrap up these assignments in the weeks following the trip and share feedback on our finished edits.

EDUCATION YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE

My highest priority is to make this trip as valuable as possible for both the aspiring filmmaker, and those who already have an advanced skillset.

We will be pressing into how to make videos that actually move people. How we can make our dream projects happen and finish work we are proud of.

This won't be your typical classroom.

This is going to be hands on. Real world. Actionable information you can start using immediately on your next projects. We are going to press into the real world approach that actually allows you to make meaningful stories.

We will have 5 days together and I want to unpack a lot.

SOME ITEMS ON OUR ITINERARY

  • The 5 Keys for incredible Stories

  • The business side of filmmaking

  • Filmmaking with Drones

  • Adventure Cinematography

  • Gimbal movements and technique

  • Lighting techniques in the field

  • Building a Youtube Channel / Online Presence

  • How to work with clients and get paid what you are worth.

I decided to ask last years attendees if the trip was worthwhile

IT’S GOING TO BE A PROPER ADVENTURE

It’s going to be a balance of epic adventure, and also great times of pressing in, and going deep on learning filmmaking. We will be sailing with Cap’n John, a stand up dude, who I went sailing with in the summer, and we’ve been hatching plans together for this filmmakers trip ever since.

It is going to be an early spring trip however. Which in BC waters means the potential for some colder temperatures and coastal rain. We have no control over the elements and the sailing conditions, but we are going to have a blast either way.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

  • All food, accommodation, and transportation once you arrive at the pick up location in Vancouver. The airport to fly into is YVR. The preferred hotel staying area is North Vancouver as this helps limit the amount of pick up locations on route to sailing.

  • Bunk accommodation on S.V. Porpoise (due to the nature of this trip and this vessel, participants will have individual bunks in a communal space - no private accommodations are available).

  • The Adventure Film Masterclass in Person Workshop

  • Project Review Sessions

  • Follow up group coaching calls afterwards

WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED

  • Airfare Travel to and from Vancouver, and personal health insurance.

  • Outdoor gear and personal effects, like rain jackets, coats, personal hygiene items.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Full packing list will be emailed to trip participants

  • Sleeping bag, rain gear, and shoes that can get wet as well as hiking shoes or boots.

  • This will be a sailing trip (duh). On the water you need to be ready for all the elements. We could have sun everyday, or it could be dropping buckets of rain. So you will be required to come prepared.

  • Having a personal camera is great, but not required. We will have several cameras and pieces of equipment as part of the workshop.

TRAVEL LOGISTICS AND WHEN TO FLY IN & OUT.

Both trips begin at 5:20am at a pickup spot in North Vancouver. This means that attendees flying in will need to arrive and find a place to stay for the night before the trip starting.

For return flights it is different for both trips.

For Trip 1, we will be returning to Vancouver area around 12-3pm depending on ferry line ups. Please do not book your return flight before this time.

For Trip 2, we will be returning to Vancouver Area around 5-7pm depending on ferry line ups. Please do not book your return flight before this time.

Most attendees who have long flights opt to stay an additional night in the Vancouver area before flying home. We can help drop you off where you would like to stay, or drive you straight to the airport.

THE INVESTMENT

  • Trip 1: $2,700

  • Trip 2: $2,600

Prices are in USD and there is a 5% tax. A deposit of $600 required to lock in your spot once accepted. It takes 2-3 days to send out acceptance letters. The first two signups receive 250$ off their total cost.

We would love to have absolutely everyone come. But we only have 10 spots total to fill. This is the hardest part of opening these trips each year, knowing there is some people I can’t have on the trip. We received 70% more applications last year than there was spots.

The way our acceptance process works, is I review all of them and send an initial batch of acceptance emails at a first come first serve basis. If there is still spots open after 24 hours, I send out to the next 10 at a first come first serve basis.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

This trip is coming up fast! But I still want to make sure we get the right people on board, and have a great experience for everyone involved. Don't stress much over the application, it's mainly a way to verify you are a real person and actually check if this workshop is right for you.
